Almost all Moskenes settlements lie on Moskenesøya’s eastern side, squeezed between steep mountains and harbours. Reine, Sørvågen and Å belong to a continuous fishing landscape, although tourism is now highly visible.
The western coast is much less accessible and contains abandoned fishing settlements. This contrast between the inhabited inner coast and exposed outer coast shapes the municipality.
