Short answer: There is no single processing time at UDI. The waiting time depends on the type of case and your answers in UDI's guide. The figures are indicative, are updated, and may change while you wait. As of September 12, 2026, the safest method is to use UDI's waiting time page, select the correct case, and read the date of the last update. Check the waiting time in four steps
- Go to UDI's official waiting times page.
- Select the correct case type, such as family, work, citizenship, or permanent residence.
- Answer the questions about the application. Small differences can lead to a different waiting time.
- Read both the estimate, the date it was updated, and the explanation below the result.
Do not use a figure from an old article, a Facebook group, or another person's case as a deadline for your own case. Two applicants may have different waiting times even if both have applied for residence.
When does the waiting time start?
UDI counts the waiting time from the day you submitted the application and documents to the police, an embassy, or a application centre. The time from online registration to the actual document submission is usually not included.
Example: You register and pay on January 2, but submit the documents on February 20. In this case, the waiting time is normally counted from February 20. Find the submission date in the confirmation or receipt from the place where you attended.
UDI builds estimates based on the age of the cases they are currently processing. Therefore, a stated waiting time is information about the queue, not a binding deadline for a decision. When UDI changes the estimate, the new information also applies to applications that have already been submitted.
Why can the case take longer?
UDI mentions several factors that affect the waiting time:
- number of applicants
- changes in the applicant's situation
- missing documentation
- need for interviews, DNA tests, or other investigations
- criminal matters
- unrest or conflict in other countries
- that another person's case must be decided first
The police, embassy, or application centre may also have waiting times for appointments. This time is not the same as UDI's processing time. UDI cannot provide information about available appointments at these locations.
If UDI needs more information, they will contact you. Read the message carefully and respond within the deadline. Do not send multiple copies of the same document. This can make the case more confusing.
What can you see on My Page?
On My Page, you can see applications you have started, submitted, or completed. You can also send documents, pay fees, and book appointments. However, My Page does not show detailed case status for all types of cases. As of September 12, 2026, most who have applied for citizenship can use "Track my application." For other case types, you usually have to use the waiting time page.
UDI does not send messages on My Page. The decision is also not necessarily there. Therefore, keep an eye on email, SMS, digital mailbox, and regular mail. Check that UDI has the correct contact information.
If you log in with ID-porten, you may in some situations download a PDF confirming legal residence and the right to work. This document can be used with an employer or public agency. If the option does not appear, UDI has a contact form to request confirmation.
Do you have the right to work while you wait?
There is no single answer for all applications. If you have a permit that can be renewed and submit an application for renewal or permanent residence at least one month before the permit expires, you generally retain the same rights while the case is processed.
What is considered submitted depends on the process. If UDI allows you to pay, upload documents, and submit everything digitally, this must be done on time. Otherwise, you normally must have met with the police and submitted the documents on time. See deadlines for renewing residence permits.
Do not interpret an application receipt as a general right to work or travel. Rights follow the specific permit and whether the application was submitted correctly and on time. You also need a valid residence card when traveling. Ask UDI for confirmation if an employer or agency needs documentation.
Can UDI prioritize the case?
Very few cases are prioritized. UDI requires a detailed explanation and documentation, such as a medical certificate, when there is a serious reason. You cannot request priority by calling, chatting, or sending regular email. Use UDI's guide for your case type and the correct channel.
Contacting UDI does not in itself shorten the waiting time. UDI states that they cannot provide more precise information than the updated waiting time page. Call if you have another specific question, but do not expect a phone call to move the case forward in the queue.
What to do when the stated time has passed?
First, check that you selected the correct case type and that it does not state that additional investigations will take longer. If the estimate has indeed passed, you can send a short written follow-up. Include your name, DUF number or case number, submission date, and what you are requesting. Do not send sensitive documents through an insecure channel.
The administration must process cases without undue delay. In case of long processing, a preliminary response should normally be given with reasons and, as far as possible, an expected response time. However, this is not a guarantee for a decision on a specific date.
If you want to complain to Sivilombudet about long processing times, Sivilombudet usually requests two written follow-ups first and reasonable response time after each. What is considered reasonable is usually two to four weeks, but depends on the case. Keep copies. Sivilombudet also states that they are currently investigating few such cases.
Use the waiting time without harming the case
- Keep your contact information updated.
- Respond quickly when UDI requests something.
- Keep receipts and all correspondence.
- Check if your passport and residence card need to be renewed.
- Read the terms that apply at the time of decision.
