You normally need to renew temporary residence even while your citizenship application is being processed. The application does not grant a residence permit. If you have also applied for permanent residence, follow that case and check which rights you retain while waiting.

Must you renew after applying for citizenship?

Yes, a citizenship application does not extend your temporary residence permit. If you do not have permanent residence or an application for it being handled under separate rules, follow the ordinary renewal process.

Utlendingsdirektoratet (UDI), the immigration directorate, says you normally need to renew no later than one month before the permit expires. This was checked on 4 October 2026 on UDI's page about a submitted citizenship application. Requirements for valid residence also apply while the citizenship case is pending.

Find the decision granting your residence permit. Check the permit type, expiry date and whether it can be renewed. A citizenship waiting-list letter does not contain a new permit to live or work in Norway.

Use the Norwegian citizenship overview to check the overall case. This guide concerns keeping your residence in order while waiting.

Check whether you have one or two pending cases

Citizenship, renewal and permanent residence are different cases. Make a separate entry for each application you have actually submitted.

CaseWhat you should findWhat the receipt alone does not show
CitizenshipSubmission date and information from UDIThat a temporary permit has been renewed.
RenewalPermit type and completed submissionThat citizenship has been granted.
Permanent residenceSubmission date and follow-up from the policeThat all conditions and rights have been clarified.

UDI's page about citizenship without permanent residence says applicants who have applied for permanent residence do not need to renew in the ordinary way. This assumes the case is followed under the permanent residence rules. Do not treat it as a general rule that any receipt gives continued work rights.

If the police have given you a temporary renewal while permanent residence is being processed, check the new expiry date. Clarify with the police or UDI what you must do if it is approaching. Submission timing, a renewable permit and fulfilled conditions may matter.

Create a calendar based on the permit

The calendar should follow your residence decision, not the expected citizenship response time. You do not know for certain when UDI will decide the case.

Fictional example: Your permit expires on 1 December. You applied for citizenship in March but have not received a response. Mark the expiry date, the deadline for the correct renewal and an earlier date for collecting documents. Do not wait until December because someone you know received a quick response.

Allow time for documents from your employer, educational institution or family, depending on the permit. First find the correct renewal process. Then book a police appointment if required or use digital submission when UDI offers it.

A useful calendar contains these tasks:

  1. Read the current decision and expiry date.
  2. Find the correct renewal page and document list.
  3. Obtain updated documents.
  4. Complete submission by the applicable deadline.
  5. Save the receipt and check the next message.

If a deadline has already passed, contact UDI with the dates. Do not assume the citizenship case fixes a late renewal.

When is renewal actually submitted?

Submission depends on the application method. For work immigration, many people can submit using electronic ID (eID); others must attend the police.

As of 4 October 2026, UDI's work residence renewal page says digital submission includes payment, document upload and sending the application. In the police process, the application is normally considered submitted when you attend and hand over the documents.

Look for confirmation of submission, not just a saved form. For an appointment, you also need the personal checklist and correct submission date. The renewal deadlines guide explains, among other things, what happens when the police have no available appointment.

The eID example concerns work immigration. Family permits, study permits and other arrangements must be checked on their own pages. Use the method UDI provides for your specific application.

Which changes must you report to UDI?

Report changes that may affect your citizenship application. UDI mentions, among other things, relationship breakdown and plans to work or study abroad.

Keep contact information correct too. If you have a new email address or phone number, inform UDI. When moving, follow the correct address-change procedure. A representative, meaning the person acting on your behalf, must also be able to contact you.

If you apply for citizenship without having obtained or applied for permanent residence, self-support may be assessed for the twelve months before the citizenship decision. This differs from the income assessment associated with a separate permanent residence application. An old period of good income is therefore not always enough.

Write a short message for a significant change: which case it concerns, what happened, the date and relevant attachments. Ask for clarification when the change affects both the residence permit and the basis for citizenship.

Employer and travel: what does the receipt prove?

The receipt shows that an application has been registered or submitted. By itself, it does not show which work or travel rights you have.

If your employer asks, collect the residence decision, card and evidence of correct renewal. Ask UDI for specific clarification if continued work rights are uncertain. A citizenship receipt is not documentation of work rights.

Before travelling, check your passport, residence card and right to enter. Do not buy a trip assuming that a waiting-list letter replaces valid travel documents. Rules for lawful residence in Norway and documents at the border are different questions.

How to follow up without restarting the case

Follow messages and deadlines in the existing case. A new citizenship application does not offer a shortcut through the queue.

UDI says deletion and resubmission can result in a longer wait. Check the status, read any document requests and send relevant changes through the correct channel. Keep a short list of what you sent and when.
