Husbanken is receiving reallocated funds for housing projects in 2026. The aim is more good-quality homes, including rental homes. This is project financing, not a new payment to you. Husbanken is to retain capacity for eligible start-loan applications towards the end of the year.
What has changed in autumn 2026?
The government is moving part of Husbanken’s lending limit to other housing projects. The change was announced on 30 October 2026 by Kommunal- og distriktsdepartementet, the ministry responsible for housing policy.
A lending limit is the maximum amount Husbanken can lend. Husbanken is the state housing bank. Municipalities have applied for less funding for start loans than the government expected. At the same time, demand for loans for better homes has increased.
According to the government announcement, the reallocation is intended to help provide more environmentally friendly, accessible and good-quality homes. The ministry also points to increased demand for loans for rental homes for people who need help in the housing market.
As of 2 November 2026, the news concerns the use of funds in 2026. The announcement does not create a new support payment that individuals can apply for.
Does this mean you will get a rental home?
No. A loan for a housing project is not the same as an offer of housing to you. Nor does the news say that a particular home is available now.
Husbanken’s rental housing scheme can fund municipalities that build, buy or convert other buildings into rental homes. A private business can also borrow for such homes. In that case, the owner must have a long-term agreement with the municipality to refer tenants.
The homes are intended to help people and families who cannot obtain or keep suitable housing on their own. If you need help renting, it is therefore useful to ask the municipality about local options. Do not use the project loan application as an application to rent a home.
Can you still apply for a start loan?
The government says Husbanken must ensure that eligible start-loan applications towards the end of 2026 can be approved. This is not a promise that every individual application will be accepted.
Husbanken explains that municipalities borrow money to provide start loans to residents. The municipality processes the applications. You must therefore still have your own case assessed there.
SamfunnPrep also explains the municipality’s role in start loans. Ask the municipality about up-to-date conditions for your situation before making plans to buy a home.
Whom should you contact?
Contact the municipality about your own housing situation. Distinguish between help finding a rental home and a loan to buy or adapt a home.
You can prepare these questions:
- I need help finding a suitable rental home. Which office should I contact?
- I want to explore a start loan. How do I get my case assessed?
- I have already submitted an application. Do you need more information from me?
These are suggested questions, not new application requirements or a guarantee of help. You can use SamfunnPrep’s practical tools to keep track of other public-service tasks.
