Places with a story
Lavangen kirke

Lavangen kirke overlooks the fjord from Soløy. Its nineteenth-century timber architecture contains an unusual combination of older musical instruments, local gifts and paintings added across several generations.
The place12
The church is a traditional timber long church, built for the community of Lavangen. Its tall entrance tower and pointed windows make it a landmark above the churchyard. The interior's furnishings connect worship with the people who supported the church, including gifts and artistic contributions recorded in the parish's jubilee history.
History and local connections12
The church was consecrated on 6 October 1891 as a chapel within the parish of Ibestad. The parish describes changes during construction: the tower was moved to the end of the building and increased in height. The organ has a separate journey. Built for Melhus kirke in 1892, it was sold to Lavangen in 1946.
What to look for1
The altarpiece from 1903 depicts the baptism of Jesus, after a painting by Adolph Tidemand. Karl Erik Harr decorated the pulpit and the parish clerk's desk in 2005. The bell was originally made in 1891 and recast in 1946. These different dates show how the church's interior continued to develop after its opening.
Planning a visit3
The church address is Kirkeveien 35. Contact Lavangen parish for the current service calendar and possibilities for seeing the interior. The parish office is in the municipal building at Nesveien 7, a different address. Ask about access requirements in advance, and respect services, funerals and the surrounding cemetery during your visit.
