Eidsborg stavkyrkje is a small medieval timber church beside Vest-Telemark Museum in Tokke. Its shingle-covered exterior, religious imagery and unusual traditions around Saint Nicholas connect building craft with the changing beliefs of a local community.

About the place12

The church is one of Norway's surviving medieval stave churches and remains a place of worship. Its exterior is covered with wooden shingles, while the interior includes later wall painting and religious furnishings. The present building followed an earlier post-built church at the same site, making the location part of a longer sequence of wooden church construction.

History and local connections1

Its dating has recently been reconsidered. The museum reports that samples taken in 2023 and analysed in a report published in 2024 suggest construction shortly before the middle of the twelfth century, earlier than the traditional thirteenth-century estimate. That revised date remains an interpretation of the evidence. Later enlargements, changes in worship and conservation work have also shaped the building visitors see today.

What to look for12

The figure of Saint Nicholas, locally called Nikuls, is central to the church's story. The museum explains a distinctive local tradition around the saint alongside changing ownership and religious practice. A guided visit helps distinguish medieval building elements from later decoration. The surrounding museum adds farm buildings and exhibitions, placing the church within a wider landscape of local craft and belief.

Plan your visit1

The museum arranges scheduled tours during the visiting season, subject to worship and weddings. The church is not generally open between those tours. The operator states that it is closed for winter from October to around the middle of April. Confirm dates and ticket arrangements on the current museum page; its digital panoramic view offers another way to explore the interior.
