Places with a story
Mannen fra havet

Mannen fra havet is Kjell Erik Killi Olsen’s sculpture at Vinjesjøen in Bø. A solitary figure holding a crystal faces a landscape where the sea, the nearby community and its museum become part of the artwork’s meaning.
The place1
Completed in 1994, the sculpture is made of cast iron and crystal and stands 4.3 metres high. It belongs to Skulpturlandskap Nordland, the county’s landscape-art collection. Its outdoor setting is essential: the work is meant to be encountered with the fjord and settlement around it.
History and local connections1
Skulpturlandskap Nordland's interpretation describes a man who has come from the sea onto land, still bearing traces of his former existence. The artist suggested that the crystal could be a gift or offering dedicated to the sea. These statements interpret the sculpture; they do not document a historical person or a local event.
What to look for1
Look at both the figure’s front and the small opening in its back, described as a niche for a family. The artist’s imagined story places new relationships beside memories of an earlier life. The nearby local museum holds the community’s material history, creating a connection between the sculpture’s myth-like narrative and the settlement’s recorded past.
Planning a visit1
Skulpturlandskap Nordland directs visitors to Vinjesjøen, following signs towards Bø’s local museum. The sculpture is approximately four hundred metres on foot from parking. Check local conditions for the approach and allow time to see how the work relates to the fjord. Museum admission and the outdoor sculpture visit are separate experiences.
