Places with a story
Hurtigrutemuseet

Hurtigrutemuseet in Stokmarknes brings coastal-route history aboard preserved ships and historic interiors. The museum makes transport history tangible through passenger rooms, original art, machinery and the everyday spaces of life at sea.
The place1
The central exhibit is the whole ship MS Finnmarken from 1956. The museum also preserves passenger saloons from the older steamship Finmarken from 1912. These are two different vessels whose names are similar but not identical. They represent different generations of technology, passenger service and interior design.
History and local connections1
The exhibitions explore the coastal route as a vital connection for communities along Norway’s coast. Transport, maritime culture and technological change are presented together, allowing the ships to be understood as part of a functioning network rather than only as elegant passenger vessels. The current museum building opened in 2021.
What to look for1
Inside, original artworks and decorative details retain the atmosphere of shipboard spaces. Specialist engine-room tours provide another perspective, while the permanent exhibitions address the route’s broader history. A café aboard MS Finnmarken occupies an authentically styled setting, linking a present-day pause with the museum’s restored interiors.
Planning a visit1
The museum is located at Richard Withs plass 1 in Stokmarknes. Check the official Museum Nord visitor information for entry tickets, opening hours and accessibility. Guided tours and visits to the engine room need separate arrangements. An ordinary entry ticket does not guarantee that every specialist tour is available. Contact staff about mobility needs and which parts of the ship you wish to see.
