Places with a story
Nusfjord

Nusfjord is a historic fishing village where fishermen’s cabins and industrial buildings remain gathered around a small harbour. Its surviving architecture makes the seasonal cod fishery visible within Flakstad’s dramatic coastal landscape.
The place12
Traditional rorbu cabins stand along the shoreline, many on wooden supports above the water. The historic centre includes buildings from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These are the working and residential spaces of a fishing village, rather than a collection of unrelated picturesque houses.
History and local connections2
Seasonal cod fishing brought fishermen from other parts of Norway to Nusfjord. Fishing cabins housed them, while harbour buildings supported their work. The operator's historical information records Nusfjord's selection in 1975 as one of Norway's pilot locations for preserving traditional architecture. This preservation history does not mean the village is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
What to look for1
Walk through the harbour setting and notice how cabins, paths and industrial buildings relate to the water. Some former fishermen’s cabins have been restored for present-day accommodation, while the former Dahl family residence preserves another aspect of village history. The contemporary resort and the historical fishing place occupy the same setting, so private accommodation areas remain working visitor premises.
Planning a visit1
Consult Nusfjord's current visitor information for day visits, guided activities and ticket arrangements. Accommodation, meals and activities are booked separately. The operator's website provides driving directions through Flakstad and details of available services. Allow for narrow village paths, and respect residents and occupied fishing cabins when exploring the historic harbour.
