Places with a story
Rana museum

Rana museum explores the making of an industrial town alongside local nature, craftsmanship and wartime experience. Its home in Moment, a transformed shopping centre, links the museum’s subject matter with the reuse of Mo i Rana’s urban fabric.
The place1
The museum and Vitensenter Nordland occupy the same building, Moment, at Midtregate 1. The museum exhibitions explore iron production, the building industry, town development, furniture making, nature and life during the occupation. An art gallery in the building adds to its role as a cultural meeting place.
History and local connections1
The exhibition ‘Jern’ follows industrial development, while ‘Rana occupied’ addresses the Second World War and the mainly Soviet prisoners forced to work on the railway between Mo and Dunderland. These subjects connect everyday town growth with the very different human experiences behind industrial and transport infrastructure.
What to look for1
Helge Monsen’s large town model is a distinctive highlight. Made at a scale of 1:100, the complete model exceeds eighty square metres, although only part is displayed physically; digital presentation extends what can be explored. Other material includes the cabinetmaking work of Håkon Loe and natural-history displays with a whale skeleton, birds, butterflies and predators.
Planning a visit12
Use the museum’s own page for the current exhibition programme and admission arrangements at Moment. Do not confuse this urban museum with its separate historical sites at Stenneset and Bredek. Rana municipality awarded Moment its 2025 architecture prize, recognising reuse of the existing structure and materials that refer to the town’s industrial identity.
