Places with a story
Torghatten

Torghatten is the mountain on Torget known for an enormous passage running straight through the rock. Walking into the opening changes the view from a coastal landmark to a dramatic interior framed by the Helgeland islands.
The place12
The mountain stands south of Brønnøysund in Brønnøy municipality. Its famous opening is about 160 metres long and 35 metres high. Sea erosion thousands of years ago shaped the passage; the surrounding visitor facilities also introduce the geology through an exhibition by Trollfjell UNESCO Geopark.
History and local connections1
Local storytelling gives the mountain another origin. In the Helgeland legend, a troll's hat intercepted an arrow aimed at Lekamøya before sunrise turned the characters to stone. This is folklore rather than a geological explanation, but it connects Torghatten to other named mountains along the coast.
What to look for2
The improved circuit passes through the rock opening, birch woodland and an exposed coastal stretch. Stone steps and the changing light within the passage are part of the experience, while views through either end reveal sea and islands. The visitor centre combines shelter with interpretation of both the landscape and its legends.
Planning a visit12
Trails begin near the visitor centre and parking area. Consult the destination and scenic-route pages before choosing a circuit or a longer mountain walk. The facilities are described as only partly wheelchair accessible, so do not assume that the route through the hole is step-free. Check current transport and seasonal service information when planning.
