Places with a story
Sømna bygdetun

Sømna bygdetun brings together buildings, gardens and food traditions in Gamle Vik. Its focus is the everyday life of farmers and fishing families, especially during the period from 1800 to 1950.
The place1
The museum has twelve buildings beside Sømna Church. Houses, farm structures and a kitchen garden show how a household produced, stored and prepared what it needed. Old grain varieties, herbs and vegetables give the outdoor areas a clear connection to the agricultural history preserved indoors.
History and local connections1
Mikkelborghuset, built in 1899 as a combined shop and dwelling, is the only museum building that has not been moved here. Sømhovdstua dates from 1812 and arrived in 1982. Signe Mikkelborg's garden, first laid out in 1912, was reconstructed in 2022, adding another period of local history to the site.
What to look for1
Look for the fishermen's cabin originally from Malmen, the agricultural equipment in the barn and the different storage and work buildings. Øystrandstua contains a wood-fired bread oven installed in 2008 for demonstrations. Together these details make the museum more than a collection of picturesque houses: they show how work and food shaped domestic space.
Planning a visit1
Find the museum at Gamle Vik 12. Helgeland Museum publishes seasonal opening arrangements and offers visits by agreement. The kitchen garden can also be visited outside indoor opening times, with signs explaining the plants. Check the programme if you want to join baking demonstrations or traditional haymaking rather than simply explore the grounds.
