Senja's outer coast has fishing villages between steep mountains and open sea, while the inner side contains forests, farming communities and calmer fjords. The municipality also includes mainland Finnsnes and Rossfjord, extending beyond the island itself.
Fish processing and aquaculture shape many coastal settlements, while graphite at Skaland and the ferrosilicon plant at Finnfjord create different industrial communities. Finnsnes concentrates shops, schools and services for a much wider area of Midt-Troms.
