If you change or interrupt your studies, you must notify Lånekassen immediately. This also applies if you take fewer courses or a break. Notifying your institution and notifying Lånekassen are two separate tasks.

Which changes must you report to Lånekassen?

You must report changes to information in your application that could affect your loan or grant. Changing education, interrupting studies and changing the number of credits are common examples.

Lånekassen is the state scheme for education loans and grants. Support is calculated from the education and period in your decision. Compare the decision with what you will actually do.

As of 7 October 2026, Lånekassen's standard support terms require you to notify it immediately. Do not wait for your next application or for the last examination to be recorded.

Pay particular attention to these changes:

  • You leave your studies before the period in the decision ends.
  • You take leave or a break.
  • You change institution or study programme.
  • You will take more or fewer credits than stated.
  • You withdraw an application that no longer applies.

SamfunnPrep's guide to higher education and Lånekassen explains the background to studies and funding. This guide concerns what to do when your plan has already changed.

How do you report a change on Dine sider?

Sign in to Dine sider at Lånekassen and use the function for reporting changes. State the actual change, its date and the education concerned.

Lånekassen's applications and forms page shows which changes you can report digitally. Follow the relevant process for interruption, changes or a different course load. Menu names may change.

Before sending, find your decision letter and information from your institution. Check particularly your last day on the old programme, any start date on the new one and your credits before and after the change.

If you cannot find the right option, contact Lånekassen through its official channel. Describe the situation rather than choosing an option that does not match. Ask for help if you are unsure whether a new application is also required.

Keep the confirmation after submitting. Later, check whether a new decision or message has arrived. A recorded notification and a completed assessment are not necessarily the same thing.

Is telling the institution enough?

No. Students at universities, university colleges and vocational colleges must report interruption to Lånekassen themselves. You must also arrange your study place or leave directly with your institution.

Lånekassen describes the student's responsibility in its information on reporting interruption. Institutions have other reporting duties, but you should not assume these replace your notification.

With your institution, clarify whether you are leaving, taking leave or only changing courses. It also tells you what happens to examination registration, your study place and the possibility of returning.

With Lånekassen, clarify support. Leave approved by your institution does not automatically mean you keep the same payments. The institution decides your study situation; Lånekassen assesses loans and grants.

Other agreements also need attention. Student housing, gym memberships and other services do not necessarily end when you report interruption. Read each agreement's terms.

What happens to money already paid?

Lånekassen must assess how much support you were entitled to during your actual study period. Do not assume the next payment or the entire last payment can be used as before.

When studies are interrupted, Lånekassen stops support when the interruption is reported and processed. If you received money for a period without entitlement, the change may lead to a new calculation. Read what the new letter says about amounts and further payments.

Interruption does not automatically mean all money from previous academic years must immediately be repaid. Nor is it the same as failing one examination. Loans, grants and any overpayment must be assessed under their respective rules.

A practical precaution is to set aside a payment you are uncertain about. Ask Lånekassen whether it covers time before or after the interruption. Do not pay a bank account from a random message; follow the official information in your case.

When full-time support ends, interest and later repayment may also become relevant. Lånekassen's standard terms and payment plan explain what applies to your loan.

What applies during illness or leave?

You must report the change even when illness or leave is the reason. At the same time, ask Lånekassen to assess whether a specific support scheme applies to your situation.

Sykestipend, the sickness grant, and foreldrestipend, the parental grant, are separate schemes with their own conditions. Describe the reason and ask for guidance rather than assuming an ordinary interruption form decides everything.

State when the situation started and which part of your studies it affected. Ask what documentation and submission method are needed. Use secure channels for health information.

You do not need to wait for a complete set of documents before reporting that your study plan has changed. Clarify with Lånekassen how to send the rest. Keep both your first message and later attachments.

How do you plan a move to a new programme?

Clarify both admission and support before relying on money for your new studies. An offer of a place is not a Lånekassen decision.

Write a short timeline: the last day of the old programme, the start of the new one and any gap between them. Also state which institutions you are moving from and to. Ask whether a new application is required in your particular situation.

Previous academic delay does not disappear when you change education. Lånekassen's academic delay rules may therefore affect funding on the new programme too.

A message could read: “I am leaving the bachelor's programme at [institution] from [date]. I plan to start at [new institution] from [date]. Please explain how this affects support and whether I need to submit a new application.”

Collect the replies from your institution and Lånekassen. Use them when budgeting for the time between studies. On SamfunnPrep, you can also find practical tools for life in Norway for other everyday tasks.
