## Key takeaways

- Seven or ten months The main limit is seven months in three years or ten months in five years, depending on your residence basis.
- Record every trip separately Note departure, return, country, purpose and number of days away, including short trips.
- Check your decision too The residence-time limit does not replace travel conditions in your temporary residence permit.

Record time abroad before permanent residence in a travel log with your departure date, return date and number of days away. UDI assesses total absence during the three- or five-year period that applies to you. Also check the travel conditions in your temporary permit.

## How much time abroad can you have before permanent residence?

For an ordinary permanent residence permit, you can normally be outside Norway for **no more than seven months in total** during the last three years, or **no more than ten months in total** during the last five years. The permit you hold when you apply determines whether the three- or five-year period applies. These are UDI's rules, checked on 1 October 2026.

| Your situation | Period UDI considers | Total time abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Permit in the three-year group, for example many work permits | The last three years | No more than seven months |
| Permit in the five-year group, for example individual protection | The last five years | No more than ten months |
| Skilled worker with documented assignments for an employer | The three-year period | Up to 15 months, if at least eight are due to these work trips |

The 15-month exception does not apply to self-employed people. It is not a general holiday allowance for everyone with a job. UDI must be able to see that at least eight months were due to work travel on assignments from the employer. Also check the travel rules for your temporary permit.

## Which trips should you include in the log?

Record **all** trips outside Norway during the period UDI will assess. An ordinary holiday, weekend visit, work trip or trip to another Schengen country is still time abroad. It can be easy to forget a short trip when you later fill out the application.

UDI's paper form for permanent residence has fields for departure date, arrival date, number of days away, country of stay and purpose. It asks for trips in chronological order. Use the same format in your personal log, even if you apply online. The form is a useful example of the information you should have ready; always follow the personal document checklist you receive in the application.

| Departure from Norway | Return to Norway | Days away* | Country | Purpose | Documentation |
|---|---|---:|---|---|---|
| 10.01.2025 | 20.01.2025 | 10 | Sweden | Private | Tickets |
| 04.05.2025 | 19.05.2025 | 15 | Poland | Work | Tickets, employer letter |
| 01.08.2025 | 22.08.2025 | 21 | Ukraine | Private | Tickets, passport |
| **Total in this example** | | **46** | | | |

\* The day counts are **fictional examples**, calculated as the difference between the dates. Check the actual travel days and documents for your own trips. UDI assesses your absence, and the limits in the rules are expressed in months. Do not convert seven months into your own fixed number of days and call it a guaranteed legal limit.

If a trip passed through several countries, you can note both the countries where you stayed and any transit. The key information is when you were **outside Norway**. If you are missing tickets, use your calendar, bank transactions, work rota and passport to help reconstruct the dates. Mark any uncertain details and ask UDI for guidance if your absence is close to the limit.

## How to get an overview, step by step

1. **Find the relevant assessment period.** Check which permit you will hold when you plan to apply and whether it belongs to the three- or five-year group. [SamfunnPrep's guide to residence time](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/botid-permanent-oppholdstillatelse-norge) explains the difference.
2. **Collect your travel dates.** Check your passport, plane and train tickets, bookings, your employer's travel log and your own calendar.
3. **Create one row per trip.** Write the departure date, return date, country and purpose. Do not combine several trips into one period.
4. **Calculate total absence.** Include all trips during the relevant period. Keep a separate calculation for any documented work assignments.
5. **Check gaps in residence separately.** UDI has a different limit for time without a residence permit: normally no more than three months in total during the period. A travel log does not address that check.
6. **Check your temporary permit.** It may have its own travel conditions, even if you are well within the residence-time limit.

You can use [SamfunnPrep's tool for residence time and periods of stay](https://samfunnprep.no/en/verktoy/botid-oppholdstid) to organise dates. SamfunnPrep cannot determine which basis for residence UDI will approve. Read each decision and UDI's guidance for your category.

## What if a trip crosses the three- or five-year boundary?

Include only the part that falls within the period UDI considers, but keep the full trip in your log. A trip that started before the first day of the period may still include time away after that day. Similarly, a trip near the end of the period may matter if you apply later than planned.

**Example:** If you plan to apply on 1 October 2026 and the three-year rule applies, look at the period starting on 1 October 2023. A trip from 25 September to 10 October 2023 crosses the boundary. Mark the dates and ask UDI to confirm how the absence should be entered in your application. If your application date changes, calculate the period again.

Do not wait until the day you apply to record a trip. A monthly check takes little time and makes it easier to spot errors. Store supporting documents somewhere safe. The travel log is a personal aid, not official advance approval.

## Is the residence-time limit the only travel risk?

No. You may need a valid residence card and travel document to return to Norway. If you have applied for renewal and are waiting for a new card, travelling abroad may cause problems at the border even if your stay in Norway is lawful. Read [deadlines and rights when renewing](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/oppholdstillatelse-fornye-frister) before booking a trip.

If you have protection, you must also be especially aware of travel to your home country. UDI may assess what the trip means for your need for protection. This applies regardless of the number of days away. UDI describes separate rules for [travel to Ukraine under collective protection](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/reise-til-ukraina-kollektiv-beskyttelse).

A permanent residence permit that has already been granted has different rules about lapsing after a long stay abroad. This travel log is about the time **before** you receive permanent residence. Once you have a complete overview, also check UDI's other permanent residence requirements. ## FAQ

### How long can I be outside Norway before permanent residence?

UDI normally allows no more than seven months in total during a three-year period or ten months in total during a five-year period. The relevant period depends on the permit you hold when you apply.

### Do short weekend trips have to go in the travel log?

Yes. Record all trips outside Norway during the relevant period, including departure, return, country, purpose and days away.

### Does the 15-month exception apply to everyone who works?

No. UDI's special rule applies to skilled workers when at least eight months of the absence are due to documented assignments for an employer. It does not apply to self-employed people.

### Can I use a fixed number of days instead of seven months?

UDI expresses the limits in months. Record actual days away, but ask UDI if you are near the limit instead of treating a number of days you chose yourself as the definitive legal limit.
