- Deadline: 30 October 2026 At least one household member must be aged 62 or over, and eligible applications are prioritised by income.

The grant for age-friendly homes can cover 25 percent of approved costs, up to 75 000 kroner. At least one member of the household must be aged 62 or over. Apply by 30 October 2026, and do not start work until you have received a grant approval.

## Who can apply?

You can apply if at least one person in the household is aged 62 or over. You must live in the home yourselves, and it must be a year-round residence and your address in the National Population Register. Both homeowners and tenants can apply. Tenants must attach their landlord's consent.

The aim is to make your home safer and easier to use as you get older. You do not need to wait until you need substantial help. However, the improvements must meet Husbanken's criteria and be permanent.

The project must cost at least 40 000 kroner. The grant is new in 2026 and is administered by Husbanken. A limited budget has been allocated. Meeting the basic requirements therefore does not guarantee that you will receive funding.

## How much can you receive?

The grant can cover up to 25 percent of approved costs. The maximum amount is 75 000 kroner. You can receive the grant only once per home.

| Cost of improvements | Maximum grant | Minimum amount you must fund |
|---|---:|---:|
| 40 000 kr | 10 000 kr | 30 000 kr |
| 100 000 kr | 25 000 kr | 75 000 kr |
| 300 000 kr | 75 000 kr | 225 000 kr |
| 400 000 kr | 75 000 kr | 325 000 kr |

If costs exceed 300 000 kroner, you will still receive no more than 75 000 kroner. Husbanken may also approve a lower amount than you apply for. Read the grant approval letter carefully before entering into any final agreements.

You must pay the contractor yourself first. The grant is paid after the work has been completed and paid for, and you have submitted the documentation. If you cannot pay the full amount upfront, you should speak to your municipality before starting. A [municipal startlån mortgage](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/startlan-kommune) may be an option in some circumstances.

## What improvements are eligible for funding?

The improvements must make the home more accessible, safer and suitable for your needs over time. Ordinary renovation or modernisation is not covered. A new, more attractive bathroom is not enough in itself; the changes must improve accessibility or safety.

Examples of improvements that may qualify include:

- a step-free route to the entrance
- wider doors and removal of thresholds
- a spacious, step-free shower and more room in the bathroom
- having essential rooms on the same level as the entrance
- better lighting, handrails and features that reduce the risk of falls
- alterations to the grounds or building associated with a funding decision from NAV

If NAV funds part of the project, Husbanken can fund other parts, but the same cost cannot be covered twice. Attach the decision letter from NAV and clearly show which work each scheme covers. ## Do not start until your grant has been approved

The project must not have started or been completed when you apply. You must first obtain quotes, submit your application and receive written grant approval. Work can then begin. If the contractor starts earlier, you may lose your entitlement to funding.

You cannot do the work yourself. Husbanken requires a contractor from a legally established and registered business. Ask for an itemised quote that separates the improvements you are seeking funding for from other renovation work.

The quote should specify materials, labour and any subcontractors, such as a plumber or electrician. If you are renovating the entire bathroom, it must be possible to distinguish the cost of the age-friendly improvements from the rest of the work.

## How to apply, step by step

Start planning early. The deadline in 2026 is 30 October, and you need a detailed quote before submitting your application.

1. Identify improvements that will make your home safer and more accessible. Your municipality's occupational therapy service can offer advice.
2. Check whether the work requires permission from the municipality or housing cooperative.
3. Obtain an itemised quote from a registered contractor.
4. Obtain your landlord's consent if you rent, and the decision letter from NAV if the project also receives NAV funding.
5. Apply online to Husbanken, or use a paper form if you cannot apply online.
6. Wait for written grant approval before the contractor starts work.

Husbanken states that you will receive a response no later than six weeks after the application deadline. If your grant is approved, you will usually have about two years to complete the work. Your letter will give the exact deadline.

## How are applications prioritised?

Applications that meet the criteria and help the applicant live at home for longer are prioritised by income. Applicants with the lowest incomes are given priority. The government has allocated 89 million kroner to the scheme in 2026.

This means that the date you apply is not the only deciding factor. You should still apply by the deadline with all supporting documents. An incomplete application may take longer to process. Provide accurate information about your household, income, home and project.

## Plan how to pay for the work before applying

You must be able to pay the entire invoice before Husbanken pays the grant. Prepare a simple budget that includes the quote, your own funds, any potential loan and a reserve for unexpected costs. The grant cannot be used to make the first payment to the contractor.

Agree in writing when invoices will be due. Do not take out expensive credit without comparing costs. Ask your municipality for guidance if you lack the funds to cover costs until the grant is paid. Remember that approval for 25 percent funding still means you must cover at least 75 percent yourself, and more if the project costs over 300 000 kroner.

## Other schemes may be more suitable

This grant is suitable for planned, permanent changes to your home. If you need assistive equipment because of an illness or disability, NAV's schemes may be more appropriate. Your municipality may also offer grants for home adaptations or help with financing.

If adapting your home is not possible, supported housing or other municipal services may become an option later. Read the overview of [nursing homes and supported housing](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/sykehjem-omsorgsbolig-norge). Your municipality can assess your needs and explain the services available locally.
