## Key takeaways

- The main rule is residence and age 25 As of 3 October 2026, people permanently resident in Norway aged 25 or over can normally request sterilisation.
- Doctor and your own form are the first step The doctor provides information and sends the signed request to the correct hospital or specialist.
- Clarify price and follow-up Ordinary patient payment does not count towards frikort, and male sterilisation does not work immediately.

Sterilisation is permanent contraception. In Norway, you can normally request it if you are permanently resident here and aged 25 or over. Start with a discussion with your doctor and clarify the form, treatment options, price and follow-up.

## Who can request sterilisation?

The main rule is that you must live permanently in Norway and be aged 25 or over. You must want the procedure yourself and receive information about what it involves.

**As of 3 October 2026, this follows section 2 of steriliseringsloven, the Sterilisation Act.** Helsedirektoratet, the Norwegian Directorate of Health, explains the rules in its [comments on the Sterilisation Act](https://www.helsedirektoratet.no/rundskriv/steriliseringsloven-med-kommentarer/sterilisering/2-alminnelige-vilkar-for-sterilisering).

Residence is not the same as Norwegian citizenship. If you do not live permanently in Norway, Helsedirektoratet describes a separate exemption route. An exemption is an exception to a rule; it is not automatic permission for the procedure.

People under 25 must apply to a steriliseringsnemnd, a sterilisation board. Certain other groups also have special rules. Ask your doctor to explain which process applies rather than using age alone as the answer.

If you are still unsure about permanent contraception, compare [other contraceptive methods](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/prevensjon-seksuell-helse-norge). A method you can stop later may be relevant if your wishes about children are undecided.

## What should you clarify with your doctor?

The doctor must explain the procedure and help you understand its permanent consequences. The discussion is also the place for questions about health, alternatives and the period afterwards.

For women, the procedure prevents eggs and sperm meeting through the fallopian tubes. For men, the sperm ducts are closed; this is called a **vasectomy**. You should not expect the procedure to be reversible.

The decision must match your own wishes about future children. A simpler or cheaper procedure for one partner is not alone a reason for that person to choose it. Ask for more time if you have not understood the information.

Consider bringing a short list to the discussion:

- What does the procedure involve for me?
- Which other contraceptive methods could be suitable?
- Which risks and practical preparations must I understand?
- When can I rely on its effect, and which checks are needed?
- Which treatment centre and price apply?

Use words you understand and ask the doctor to explain medical terms. A signed form should follow information, rather than replace a discussion you have not understood.

## How to use the form and referral

You complete the form “Begjæring om sterilisering” after receiving information from your doctor. The doctor sends it to a hospital or specialist carrying out the procedure.

Begjæring means that you request sterilisation here. The form also contains confirmation that you received the necessary information. Use the current version from Helsedirektoratet rather than a random copy from an internet forum.

The usual sequence is:

1. Arrange a discussion with your doctor and say the topic is sterilisation.
2. Clarify whether you follow the ordinary request route or need a board application.
3. Receive information and complete the correct form.
4. Clarify where the doctor sends the documents.
5. Follow up the treatment centre's response about appointments and preparations.

Find forms and the process on [Helsedirektoratet's page on requests and applications](https://www.helsedirektoratet.no/lov-og-forskrift/sterilisering/begjaering-og-soknad-om-sterilisering). If you receive no information, ask the doctor's office where the referral was sent.

## What if your case needs a board decision?

The doctor sends the application and necessary documentation to the sterilisation board in your county. The board assesses it under the Act's special rules.

Helsedirektoratet specifies this process for people under 25 and certain groups with mental or cognitive conditions. The rules use legal terms the doctor must explain individually. Do not assume that every mental health diagnosis means the same application route.

You must receive information adapted to your needs. An application is not automatically approved because a form was submitted. Ask which documents the doctor includes and what happens next.

If refused, an appeal route exists. Helsenorge explains that the board can first reassess the case and that Steriliseringsrådet, the Sterilisation Council, is the appeal body. Statsforvalteren, the state's representative in the county, handles forwarding. Follow the decision's appeal information.

## Where can the procedure be performed?

Availability depends on the procedure and which treatment centres perform it. Public and private provision is not equally accessible to everyone.

**As of 3 October 2026, Helsenorge describes limited public provision for sterilisation of men without a medical reason.** This is not defined as necessary healthcare that public services must provide. Several private hospitals and specialists offer it.

For women, waiting times vary between hospitals. Ask your doctor where you can be referred and ask the centre to confirm that it actually provides the procedure. An old price example does not prove that a particular hospital performs it now.

If you contact a private clinic, ask whether it has a public agreement or provides wholly private treatment. Clarify what the price includes, such as consultation and necessary follow-up.

## What must you pay?

You usually pay for sterilisation yourself. Ordinary patient payment for the procedure does not count towards frikort, the exemption card, and applies even if you have one.

**As of 3 October 2026, Helsenorge lists NOK 6,079 for women and NOK 1,268 for men in public healthcare.** Private centres without public agreements may charge more. Check the price before booking.

| Situation | What you should clarify |
|---|---|
| Ordinary public procedure | Listed patient payment and what it covers |
| Wholly private treatment | The clinic's own total price |
| Possible payment exemption | Whether the centre considers the conditions met |

There are exceptions to ordinary payment. Helsenorge describes procedures during another hospital admission, certain medical reasons and sterilisation-board decisions, among others. Ask the centre whether the exception actually applies to you. Simply referring to frikort is insufficient.

See [Helsenorge's information on sterilisation](https://www.helsenorge.no/sex-og-samliv/prevensjon/sterilisering/) for prices and payment exceptions.

## What should you know about the period afterwards?

Follow the centre's information about activity, checks and contraception after the procedure. Male sterilisation does not work immediately.

Helsenorge describes a period of around three months after male sterilisation. Clarify the required checks with the clinic and use other contraception until told you can rely on the procedure. A calendar date alone does not replace follow-up.

Sterilisation does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Ask about condoms and infection prevention if you need this protection. For problems after surgery, follow the clinic's advice about when to contact it.

Use [SamfunnPrep's practical tools](https://samfunnprep.no/en/verktoy) for other tasks in Norway. For sterilisation, the next step is an informed discussion with your doctor and specific clarification of availability, price and checks.

## FAQ

### Must I be a Norwegian citizen?

The main rule covers people permanently resident in Norway aged 25 or over. Citizenship is not the same as the residence condition.

### Can I be sterilised before age 25?

The application must then be considered by a sterilisation board. The doctor sends the application and necessary documents. Permission is not automatic.

### Does frikort cover ordinary patient payment?

No. Helsenorge states that ordinary payment for sterilisation applies even with frikort and does not count towards it. Separate exceptions exist.

### Does male sterilisation work immediately?

No. Use other contraception until you have followed the clinic’s checks and been told you can rely on the procedure.
