## Key takeaways

- Curriculum first Use the official learning resource and its three subject areas; app categories do not define a new official curriculum.
- 26 out of 34 The test has 38 tasks and a maximum of 60 minutes. Four pilot tasks do not count.
- Adapt your plan Record difficult topics, words and task types. A six-week plan is a suggestion, not a guarantee.

Begin with the official adult-immigrant curriculum at samfunnskunnskap.no, identify topics you cannot yet explain and use practice questions and the official sample test to check understanding. The time you need depends on prior knowledge, language and available study time. A six-week plan is a suggestion, not a guarantee of passing.

Exam facts, languages and registration guidance were checked against HK-dir and UDI on 26 September 2026. SamfunnPrep is independent and not affiliated with HK-dir. Our questions are original practice material, not actual official exam questions.

## Choose the correct test and language first

Samfunnskunnskapsprøven, the Norwegian social studies test for immigrants, assesses knowledge of Norway and Norwegian society. It is available in 23 languages, selected at the test centre. It follows the 75-hour social studies curriculum. See [HK-dir’s test-content guidance](https://hkdir.no/voksenopplaering/norsk-og-samfunnskunnskap/administrere-og-gjennomfore-prover/praktisk-informasjon-til-provestedene/innhold-i-provene) and [candidate information](https://prove.hkdir.no/samfunnskunnskapsprove/les-om-proven-samfunnskunnskap).

For citizenship, the social studies result must be a pass in Norwegian, or you must meet the knowledge requirement through another accepted route such as statsborgerprøven. Spoken Norwegian is a separate requirement. Your application determines rules and exemptions: check [UDI’s citizenship tests](https://www.udi.no/ord-og-begreper/krav-om-prover-for-a-fa-norsk-statsborgerskap/) and [permanent-residence guidance](https://udi.no/viktige-meldinger/endringer-i-kravene-om-norsk-og-samfunnskunnskap-permanent-oppholdstillatelse/).

## Format and passing score

| Item | Official social studies test |
| --- | --- |
| Total tasks | 38 |
| Scored tasks | 34; four pilot tasks do not count |
| To pass | At least 26 correct among the 34 scored tasks |
| Time | Maximum 60 minutes |
| Task types | Multiple choice and image tasks |

You are not told which four tasks are pilots, so treat every task carefully. Calculating 26 out of 38 as the pass percentage misrepresents the threshold. Read the [complete test guide](https://samfunnprep.no/en/samfunnskunnskapsproven) and access the official sample through [HK-dir’s practice page](https://prove.hkdir.no/samfunnskunnskapsprove/les-pensum-og-ov-til-proven-samfunnskunnskapsprove). The sample introduces the task format and uses different questions from the real test.

## Cover the whole curriculum

HK-dir points to three subject areas in the learning resource: education, skills and working life; family, health and everyday life; Norway past and present. Use [samfunnskunnskap.no](https://samfunnskunnskap.no/) as your foundation. An app’s category list or an older chapter list does not define the current official curriculum. We cannot promise that a particular topic supplies the most questions in your test.

## A six-week plan you can adapt

| Period | Work | Check your understanding |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Week 1 | Map the curriculum and try sample tasks | Which words, institutions and topics are unfamiliar? |
| Week 2 | Education, skills and working life | Can you explain rights and duties in your own words? |
| Week 3 | Family, health and everyday life | Can you identify the service responsible in a situation? |
| Week 4 | Norway past and present | Can you distinguish history, democracy and current institutions? |
| Week 5 | Revisit weak topics across the areas | Can you explain why the other answer options are wrong? |
| Week 6 | Practise with time limits and review errors | Can you explain answers without your notes? |

Reallocate time according to your results. If you repeatedly misunderstand a question, work on vocabulary before speed. If one topic is familiar, give more time to another. Adjust the plan to evidence from your own answers rather than a promise about how fast other candidates pass.

## Keep an error log, not just a score

For an incorrect answer, record the topic, why you chose it, the correct explanation and the curriculum section that resolves it. Separate knowledge gaps, unfamiliar vocabulary and misreading. Begin the next session by explaining the idea, then try another task on the topic. Use the log to choose what to revisit in your next session.

Use [50 explained practice questions](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/50-sporsmal-med-svar), [free sample questions](https://samfunnprep.no/en/gratis-test) and [common test mistakes](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/vanlige-feil-pa-eksamen). A practice score can show progress, but these are independent tasks and the score cannot guarantee the official result.

## Registration and final checks

HK-dir links to a national registration portal where you select county and centre. If entitled to one free test, contact your local centre to register. Municipalities set fees; HK-dir listed NOK 500–1,300 when checked. Verify your local price and date, choose the payment method and confirm that registration is complete. See [official registration guidance](https://prove.hkdir.no/samfunnskunnskapsprove/meld-deg-pa-samfunnskunnnskap) and [our registration guide](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/melde-seg-pa-proven).

Before exam day, verify the invitation, address, time and valid physical ID requirement. Use the official sample to learn the interface. If you need accommodations, follow the centre’s and HK-dir’s instructions early.
