## Key takeaways

- Cancel with the right party Find the payment recipient and keep written cancellation confirmation.
- Normally the next billing period With monthly advance payment, the agreement normally ends from the next period, subject to legal qualifications.
- Secure your files first Make a working copy of necessary data before ending cloud storage or deleting the account.

You can cancel digital subscriptions easily. Find who your agreement is with, send the cancellation and keep confirmation. With monthly advance payment, the agreement normally ends from the next billing period. Deleting the app does not necessarily cancel the subscription.

## Where do you cancel the subscription?

Cancel with the service or company you made the agreement with. Check the receipt and your account's subscription section.

This guide covers digital services such as streaming, gaming and cloud storage for private use. **Digitalytelsesloven**, the Norwegian law on digital content and services, regulates these agreements between businesses and consumers. Mobile subscriptions and ordinary internet access follow other rules. SamfunnPrep's [mobile and internet guide](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/mobilabonnement-og-internett-norge) explains those services.

You may have bought directly on the service's website or through an app store. Find the receipt and check who charges you. The visible app and the payment recipient are not always the same company. Use the purchase channel's subscription overview if it administers the agreement.

As checked on 4 October 2026, [digitalytelsesloven section 33](https://lovdata.no/dokument/NL/lov/2022-06-17-56) requires cancellation to be easy. You can use the communication method used to make the agreement. You can also use another suitable method the provider otherwise uses in its business.

The **provider** is the company supplying the service. If you ordered online, you should not simply be required to attend in person to cancel. If the button fails, document the problem and contact the provider in writing through a suitable channel.

## When do payments stop?

With agreed monthly advance payment, cancellation normally takes effect from the next billing period. It may differ if that would be unreasonable given the nature of the agreement, or if a valid commitment period applies.

**Advance payment** means paying before the period when you use the service. Check its start and end dates. “One month” is not always a calendar month from the first to the last day.

**Imaginary example:** You pay on the 12th each month for access until the next payment date. You cancel on 20 October. Without a commitment, the starting point is that the agreement ends from the next billing period, beginning on 12 November. Ask the provider to confirm the date in writing.

Cancellation does not automatically refund all earlier payments. If a charge was wrong, explain it as a separate claim. Include the date and amount. Not using the service is usually insufficient to say the entire subscription was invalid.

**Forbrukerrådet**, the Consumer Council, offers consumer-rights guidance and reminds you that [streaming subscriptions often renew automatically](https://www.forbrukerradet.no/forside/digitalt/strommetjenester-og-digitalt-innhold/). Review the agreement even if you have not opened the app for a long time.

## Can the service require a commitment period?

Digitalytelsesloven limits commitment periods and requires a financial benefit proportionate to the commitment. The usual limit is six months at a time; in special cases it may be twelve months.

Under section 57, these commitment rules apply to agreements made after the Act entered into force on 1 January 2023. An older agreement therefore needs separate assessment. Do not assume all your agreements have the same limit.

A **commitment period**, or bindingstid, means the agreement cannot be ended for a period without possible costs. For cancellation during that period, the provider may claim reasonable compensation agreed in advance, subject to section 33. Ask for the agreement basis and calculation before accepting a fee.

| Situation | What you should check |
|---|---|
| Ongoing monthly agreement without commitment | Next billing period and confirmed end date. |
| Agreement with a commitment | Agreement date, the benefit you received and agreed cancellation compensation. |
| Annual agreement paid in advance | Whether payment and any commitment are explained, and which cancellation terms apply. |

Paying for a year at once does not explain every aspect of a commitment. Ask for a clear answer if the terms are unclear. You do not need to apply mobile subscription rules to a separate streaming service.

## What does notice every six months mean?

At least every six months, the provider must notify you that the digital agreement is ongoing and explain how to cancel. Missing notice may give a right to cancel without cost from the time the notice should have been sent.

This follows section 33, as checked on 4 October 2026. Check email, account messages and other agreed notification channels before saying you received no notice. A message you overlooked is not necessarily one never sent.

Ask when and how the last notice was sent. If it was missing, refer to the rule and state the cancellation date you demand. This is a different basis from ordinary cancellation starting next billing period.

Keep the reply and earlier messages. Do not calculate a guaranteed refund without checking actual dates. You can seek help with a dispute about the agreement or notice.

## What should you do before a trial or cloud storage ends?

Check the transition to payment before the free trial ends. Save necessary files before ending cloud storage or deleting the account.

Forbrukerrådet says a free trial must not become a paid subscription without clear consent. Read your order: you may already have accepted a stated price after the trial. Cancellation and claiming that payment lacked consent are different issues.

For **cloud storage**, meaning files on the provider's servers, check what happens to space and access. [Forbrukerrådet's cloud storage guidance](https://www.forbrukerradet.no/forside/digitalt/skylagring/) is a starting point. The provider's own terms explain the specific service.

Follow this order:

1. Find the agreement, payment channel and next payment date.
2. Copy photos, documents and other necessary files.
3. Check that the copy actually opens without the service.
4. Send the cancellation and keep the confirmed end date.
5. Consider account deletion separately once necessary data is safe.

## What if payments continue?

Send a written complaint with your cancellation, confirmation and new charge. Ask the provider to explain the payment and demand correction if it is wrong.

Deleting the app or stopping a payment card is not a reliable substitute for cancellation. The agreement and a possible payment claim may remain. Do not ignore a bill simply because you stopped using the service.

SamfunnPrep's [consumer complaints guide](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/klage-som-forbruker-klagenemnder-norge) helps you find the next recipient if unresolved. An [overview of personal finances](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/personlig-okonomi-norge) can make subscriptions easier to spot.

List the service name, monthly price and cancellation date together. Use [SamfunnPrep's tools and everyday guides](https://samfunnprep.no/en/verktoy) when organising practical tasks. Send the cancellation itself to the correct contracting party.
