## Key takeaways

- Your oral result can be higher HK-dir allows a higher or lower oral result than the registered level; this does not guarantee any result.
- Compare the actual tasks A1–A2 includes picture description, while A2–B1 has a separate task where you explain an opinion.
- Practise real conversation Practise responding and following up on what your partner says, as well as speaking on your own.

For the oral Norwegian test, you choose a level range when registering. Choose according to the tasks you can complete, not just the level you need. Your oral result can be higher or lower than your chosen range.

This guide helps you choose between **A1–A2 and A2–B1** as you prepare for 2027. Information about the test format was checked on 20 October 2026 with Direktoratet for høyere utdanning og kompetanse (HK-dir), the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills. Check the format and dates again before registering.

If you are applying for permanent residence, start with the [overview of Norwegian language and social studies requirements](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/norskkravet-permanent-oppholdstillatelse). The result you must document and the test level you should choose are two different questions.

## Can you get A2 in either test?

Yes, both A1–A2 and A2–B1 are relevant level ranges when your goal is oral A2. Choosing a range does not guarantee a particular result.

HK-dir states that you can receive a higher or lower result in the oral test. If the assessor thinks you could achieve a higher level, you may receive an extra question. This is explained in [HK-dir's information about the oral test](https://prove.hkdir.no/norskprove-a1-b2/les-om-proven-norsk-A1-B2/om-muntlig-prove).

**The writing test works differently:** You cannot receive a result above the level you registered for. Do not apply the writing rule when choosing your oral test. Do not plan your oral test around hoping for extra questions either. Choose tasks that give you a good opportunity to demonstrate your language skills.

## How do the tasks differ?

At A1–A2, you do more describing and have a shorter conversation. At A2–B1, you must also express an opinion and explain why you hold it.

The table is based on HK-dir's task descriptions as of 20 October 2026. Times are approximate.

| Task | A1–A2 | A2–B1 |
|---|---|---|
| Introduce yourself | Separate task, about 1–2 minutes | No equivalent separate introduction task |
| Describe a picture | Separate task, about 2–3 minutes | No equivalent separate picture task |
| Talk about a topic | About 2–3 minutes | About 2–3 minutes |
| Conversation with another candidate | About 2–3 minutes together | About 5–7 minutes together |
| State and explain an opinion | No equivalent separate opinion task | About 2–3 minutes |

The test concerns how you use Norwegian. It does not test your knowledge of politics, history or other subjects. You therefore do not need to learn the right opinions. You need to understand the question and make yourself understood.

## How do you find a suitable level?

Try official sample tasks from both ranges before deciding. If possible, ask a teacher to assess a couple of answers.

Use [HK-dir's sample oral test tasks](https://prove.hkdir.no/norskprove-a1-b2/ov-til-prove-norsk-A1-B2/ov-til-muntlig-prove). Choose one picture task and one task requiring you to explain an opinion. Complete them without a prepared script.

Afterwards, you can note:

- Did I understand what I had to do?
- Could I talk coherently about the topic?
- Could I explain a reason, rather than just say “yes” or “no”?
- Could I answer a new question from my conversation partner?
- Did I need help because the task was unclear, or because I lacked Norwegian words?

This is a self-check, not an official assessment. A recording can help you hear pauses and unclear passages. Record yourself, or agree on recording with your practice partner.

If A2–B1 tasks leave you completely silent, it is useful to discuss A1–A2 with your teacher. If you can already explain opinions and keep a conversation going, look more closely at A2–B1. HK-dir also provides a level selector and self-assessment form through its registration page.

## How do you practise conversation with another person?

Practise answering, following up and giving the other person space. The oral test is normally conducted with two candidates.

An individual talk is not enough practice for the conversation task. Set aside a session where you take turns speaking. Use a simple everyday topic, such as travelling to work by bus or leisure activities.

An example created for this guide is: “What makes public transport easier to use?” First describe an experience of your own. Then ask what your partner thinks. Respond to something your partner actually said before adding a new point.

You can practise phrases such as “I agree because …”, “For me, … is important” and “What do you think about …?” These phrases help you participate. They should not become a prepared answer you use regardless of the question.

If your partner talks a lot, try joining in with a relevant question. If your partner says little, ask a simple question and allow time for an answer. The aim of practice is a conversation you both contribute to.

## Make a short plan before your test in 2027

Build your plan around the skill you need to develop, and choose your level before registration. The plan below is a practice suggestion, not an official course requirement.

| Session | Task | What you check |
|---|---|---|
| First session | Try both level ranges | Which tasks can you get started on? |
| Second session | Talk about two everyday topics | Can you hear a clear beginning and a coherent account? |
| Third session | Conversation with a partner | Do you respond to what the other person says? |
| Fourth session | Repeat with new questions | Can you use the language without a script? |

Write down one specific improvement after each session. “I need to improve” is too broad. “I will explain one reason after giving my opinion” gives you a clear task.

Then check your invitation. Oral and written subtests can be on different days. Choose only the subtests you actually need for your purpose. HK-dir allows you to choose one or more subtests, but you cannot take the same subtest several times in the same test period.

## Keep the language test and social studies separate

The Norwegian test measures language, while the social studies test measures knowledge of Norwegian society. Progress in a quiz therefore does not show your oral Norwegian level.

SamfunnPrep can help you practise social studies while you practise spoken Norwegian with a teacher or partner. Use [SamfunnPrep's tools](https://samfunnprep.no/en/verktoy) to keep track of practical tasks before your application. Before registering, write down the test type, required result and chosen level range separately.

## FAQ

### Can I get A2 if I choose A1–A2?

Yes. A1–A2 is a relevant range when your goal is A2, but your result depends on what you demonstrate in the test.

### Can I get B1 in the A1–A2 oral test?

HK-dir says that an oral result can be higher than the registered level. The assessor may give an extra question from the level above. There is no guarantee of B1.

### Does the same rule apply to writing?

No. In the writing test, you cannot receive a result above the level you registered for.

### Should I practise alone or with a partner?

Do both. Some tasks are individual, while one task is a conversation with another candidate.
