## Key takeaways

- Report the loss before ordering Use Din side at Statens vegvesen and save the loss date and the documentation you receive.
- Four countries, three months The permit issued after a loss is valid in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland for three months, with valid identification.
- Check which document you have The permit after a loss, the certificate after ordering and the driving licence app have different conditions for use.

Report a lost driving licence on Din side at Statens vegvesen. You can print a temporary driving permit there. You normally need to wait four weeks before ordering a new card. Check where the permit is valid before driving.

## What should you do first when your licence is missing?

Report the card lost and arrange valid documentation before driving. A missing card and a withdrawn right to drive are different matters.

**Statens vegvesen** is the authority responsible for Norwegian driving licences and vehicles. This guide mainly applies if you have lost a Norwegian licence. If the police have withdrawn your right to drive, reporting the card lost does not give you permission to drive.

First check whether you know where the card is. If you left it at a known place, choose the service for a misplaced licence. If you do not know where it is, report it lost. Your information should describe what actually happened.

You need electronic login to use Din side. Read SamfunnPrep's guide to [BankID, ID-porten and MinID](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/bankid-id-porten-minid) if you need help understanding the login options. **ID-porten** is the shared login service for many public services.

## How do you report the loss without ordering incorrectly?

Report the loss first. Reporting a loss and ordering a new card are two separate actions.

Practical sequence:

1. Open vegvesen.no yourself and go to Din side.
2. Select your licence and the service for reporting a loss.
3. Check the information before submitting the report.
4. Download and print the driving permit if you need it.
5. Note the date you reported the loss and when the permit expires.

You can also visit the police or a driver and vehicle licensing office, called a trafikkstasjon, with valid identification. Book an appointment before visiting the licensing office. These options are described by [Statens vegvesen on lost driving licences](https://www.vegvesen.no/forerkort/har-forerkort/mistet-forerkort/).

Save the confirmation somewhere you can find it again. If both your wallet and phone are missing, you may need help with several separate matters. Contact the bank about bank cards. Contact the responsible document authority about passports or other identity cards. Reporting a lost driving licence does not resolve these matters automatically.

## Can you drive while you wait?

You can use a valid temporary driving permit within the area it covers. You must carry the permit and valid identification.

As of 3 October 2026, the permit issued after a loss is valid in **Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland**. It lasts three months. It can be extended once, to a maximum of six months from the date you reported the loss.

Read the document itself before driving. Check the name, date and licence categories it covers. A calendar reminder a few days before expiry gives you time to act.

There is also an app called **Førerkort**. A valid digital driving licence can be used when driving in Norway. Your phone must have power, and its screen must be readable. A screenshot is not the same as showing the licence in the app.

If you only left the card at a known place and already have a digital licence, you normally do not need to report it misplaced for driving in Norway. If it is actually lost, follow the loss procedure. See the [rules for digital driving licences](https://www.vegvesen.no/forerkort/har-forerkort/digitalt-forerkort/).

## When can you order a new driving licence?

You can normally order a new card no earlier than four weeks after reporting the loss. Normal residence in Norway is required to obtain a new Norwegian licence.

As of 3 October 2026, there are exceptions to the waiting period. These include a name change, passing a test for a new licence category and certain renewals. Documented driving outside the Nordic region before the four weeks have passed can also qualify for an exception.

Contact Statens vegvesen if an exception may apply to you. Do not choose information that does not apply just to order sooner. For foreign travel, give the country and travel date, and ask what documentation they need.

The [driving licence ordering page](https://www.vegvesen.no/forerkort/har-forerkort/bestill-forerkort/) tells you whether you can order online. You must visit a licensing office in some situations, including a name change or an old photo. Check the cost before paying.

After ordering, you may receive a **midlertidig førerbevis**, a temporary licence certificate. This is a different type of document from the temporary driving permit issued after a loss. Statens vegvesen states that the certificate issued when ordering is valid only in Norway. Read the name and conditions of the document you actually receive.

## What applies if you are travelling abroad?

Check your documentation before travelling. The Norwegian driving licence app alone does not provide valid driving licence documentation abroad.

If your card goes missing in Sweden, Denmark or Finland, you can report the loss on Din side. The permit issued after a loss can be used in these countries. If it goes missing in another country, you should still report the loss, but this permit is not valid there.

Contact Statens vegvesen before continuing to drive. If you want to rent a car, also check what the rental company accepts. A legal driving permit does not necessarily mean a private company will rent you a car.

Make a short plan: which document do you have, where will you drive, and when will the new card arrive? If anything is unclear, arrange another form of transport while waiting for an answer.

## What should you do if the card is found?

The key question is whether you have already ordered a new card. Do not use the old one without checking this.

If you find the card before ordering a replacement, report it found on Din side. After reporting it found, you can use it again. If you have ordered a new card, the old one must be destroyed or handed in at a licensing office.

Check both your loss report and order confirmation. A card that arrives in the post or turns up behind a cupboard does not automatically become valid again.

## What if your licence is foreign?

Contact Statens vegvesen about documentation from the country that issued the card. You cannot order an ordinary Norwegian replacement simply because a foreign card is missing.

You must obtain proof of your driving entitlement from the licensing authority in the issuing country and take it to a licensing office. Book an appointment. Clarify which temporary arrangement applies in your case before driving.

Exchanging a foreign licence is a separate process. SamfunnPrep explains [exchanging licences from the EU, the United Kingdom and Switzerland](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/konvertere-forerkort-eu-uk-sveits) in a separate guide.

## Check this before your next drive

Have valid documentation, the correct identification and a clear expiry date. Also check that the document is valid in the country where you will drive.

SamfunnPrep provides [practical tools for daily life in Norway](https://samfunnprep.no/en/verktoy). Consider setting reminders for the loss date, ordering and expiry so you can follow the process until your new card arrives.
