## Key takeaways

- Start with official material Give AI a short excerpt from samfunnskunnskap.no and ask for an explanation without adding anything that is not in the source.
- Check each important answer Check numbers, deadlines, duties and exceptions with the responsible agency before memorising them.
- Practice questions are not official AI and SamfunnPrep can help you practise, but neither gives access to closed exam questions.

AI can help you understand and review the syllabus for the social studies test. Give the tool text from a trusted source, ask for a simple explanation, and check every important answer against the original. AI-generated questions are for practice, not official exam questions.

## What can AI help with when you prepare?

Artificial intelligence (AI) can explain difficult words, ask review questions and help summarise a text. It can be a conversation partner when you study alone. It can also give confident answers that are wrong, incomplete or outdated. So start with learning material you can verify.

The Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) points to [samfunnskunnskap.no](https://samfunnskunnskap.no/nb/) as the learning material for the social studies test. The texts cover topics including working life, family, health and Norway past and present. Read the original first. Use AI to explain exactly what you do not understand, then return to the original.

Read [the guide to the official learning material](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/ny-i-norge-bok) if you need help choosing a first topic. Your own practice questions can add variety after you have read the text.

| Task | Ask AI to | Check for yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Difficult paragraph | Explain it in simpler Norwegian | Does the meaning match the original? |
| Unfamiliar word | Give a definition and an example | Is the word used that way in the source text? |
| Revision | Create new review questions | Is each answer supported by the source? |
| A changed rule or figure | Suggest where to look | Find the current rule with the responsible agency. |

## What questions can you ask AI?

Good prompts limit the tool to a text you have checked yourself. Use a short public text or a few sentences from the learning material. Paste the link or provide the title and date. If the tool cannot open the link, paste a short excerpt you are allowed to use.

**For a simple explanation:**

> Explain this paragraph in simple Norwegian at A2–B1 level. Keep the meaning. Explain three difficult words. Write “I don't know” if the text does not give an answer. Here is the paragraph: [short excerpt from samfunnskunnskap.no].

**To distinguish concepts:**

> Use only the text below. What is the difference between “right” and “duty”? Give one new, clearly labelled example of each word. Do not add a Norwegian legal rule that is not in the text. [excerpt].

**For self-testing:**

> Create three new practice questions based on the text. Do not call them official test questions. Do not show the answers until I have responded. Then explain why each answer matches the text. [excerpt].

**For a checklist:**

> Extract claims containing years, amounts or words such as “must” and “can”. Mark each claim with the sentence in the source that supports it. Write “not documented in the excerpt” when support is missing. [excerpt].

These prompts give the tool a clear task. They still cannot force it to answer correctly. Read the result critically, even when the explanation seems simple and friendly.

## How do you check an AI answer in five minutes?

Compare the answer with the original source before memorising it. An AI answer without a verifiable source is only a suggested explanation.

1. **Find the claim.** Mark one specific statement, especially a number, deadline, right or duty.
2. **Find the original.** Open the same page on samfunnskunnskap.no, HK-dir or another responsible agency's site. Do not trust a link just because AI invented a convincing title.
3. **Check the wording.** Does it say “can”, “must”, “as a general rule” or include an exception? Small words change the meaning.
4. **Check the date.** An old text may explain history but not necessarily the current rule. Check when the authority last updated the information.
5. **Write your own explanation.** Use one or two sentences without copying the AI answer. If you cannot explain it, read the source again.

Example: AI writes, “Everyone must complete tuition before they can apply for permanent residence.” Stop at the word **everyone**. Check with the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) which permanent residence requirements apply now, and distinguish test requirements from any separate duty to attend tuition. If the source does not support “everyone”, correct your notes. [The source criticism guide](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/kildekritikk-kritisk-tenkning-norge) shows the same method for other kinds of online answers.

## When should you contact the responsible agency directly?

Contact UDI, HK-dir, NAV or your municipality when the answer concerns your application, a deadline or a right. An AI tool does not automatically know your permit, test result or municipality's practices. Do not let a generated answer decide when you apply for renewal or which documents you submit.

For the test itself, HK-dir says the official sample test shows what the questions may look like, but does not contain the questions you will get on test day. An AI tool also does not have access to closed exam questions. If it claims to know “the real questions”, reject that claim.

You do not need to share your passport, national identity number, UDI decision, health information or other private documents with an open AI service to learn social studies. Use public texts and fictional examples. For specific personal questions, contact the right agency through the channel it recommends.

## How to combine the syllabus, AI and a practice test

A simple study session can last 20 minutes. Read a short public text for eight minutes. Spend five minutes asking AI about one difficult concept. Check the explanation against the original. Then spend seven minutes on your own notes or new practice questions. Repeat after a few days without looking at the explanation first.

On SamfunnPrep, you can take a [free practice test](https://samfunnprep.no/en/gratis-test) and find topics you want to read more about. SamfunnPrep is an independent practice resource. AI questions and our practice questions are not official HK-dir exam questions, and a good practice result cannot guarantee that you will pass. Read [50 original practice questions with explanations](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/50-sporsmal-med-svar) to see what explanations can look like.

The sources and test information here were checked on **1 October 2026**. Ready to test what you have understood? [Try SamfunnPrep for free](https://samfunnprep.no/register), and check doubtful answers against the public source.

## FAQ

### Can AI tell me which questions I will get on the social studies test?

No. AI-generated questions are for practice. HK-dir's official sample test shows similar questions, not the ones used on test day.

### What should I give AI when I ask for an explanation?

Give it a short public text from a trusted source and ask for a simple explanation that sticks to the text.

### How can I spot an incorrect AI answer?

Find one specific claim about a number, deadline, duty or right. Compare the wording and date with the original from the responsible agency.

### Should I upload my UDI decision to an open AI service?

You do not need to share private documents to learn the syllabus. Use public texts and fictional examples; contact UDI about your own case.

### Can AI replace the learning material on samfunnskunnskap.no?

No. Use the learning material as your basis and AI to explain or review it. Check important answers against the source.
