## Key takeaways

- A power of attorney gives real access The representative can read documents, speak with UDI and receive the decision.
- Use UDI's form Sign it and attach an ID copy showing your signature; keep the receipt.
- You can change your mind Choose the scope and duration, and revoke the authorisation if you no longer want it.

A power of attorney lets another adult follow up on your UDI case. They can speak with UDI, read the documents and receive the decision. UDI normally contacts your representative instead of you. You choose the scope and duration. Checked **2 October 2026**.

## What can the other person actually do?

UDI calls this person an **authorised representative**. The representative must be over 18. It may be a spouse, friend, employer or another adult you trust. A power of attorney may help if you need help understanding letters, following up on an application or speaking with UDI while you are unavailable. You remain the applicant; the power of attorney does not itself give you a right to residence or a better outcome.

| With a valid power of attorney | Without a power of attorney |
|---|---|
| The person can call UDI about your case on your behalf. | UDI generally cannot share private case information with that person. |
| The person can access the documents. | The person can help you read documents that you choose to show them. |
| The authorities send enquiries and the decision to the representative. | You normally receive replies yourself, or through your lawyer if you have one in the case. |

**The last row matters most in practice.** If you authorise someone else, agree that they will forward summonses and decisions promptly. An appeal deadline may start when the representative receives the decision. If you are refused, read [how to appeal a UDI refusal](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/avslag-fra-udi-klage-une-norge), and always check the deadline in the letter.

## How to grant a power of attorney when you apply

UDI says applicants using the Application Portal receive a power of attorney form with the cover letter by email. Complete the form and submit it with the application to the police or embassy, following the process for your case. If you did not receive the form, UDI's [power of attorney form](https://www.udi.no/globalassets/global/skjemaer/fullmakt-b.pdf) is on its official website. Write names and details clearly, sign it yourself and make sure the representative can be reached.

You can also grant a power of attorney **after** submitting your application:

1. Complete and sign UDI's power of attorney form.
2. Make a copy of the passport page with your personal details and signature, or other approved identification showing your signature.
3. Upload the form and ID copy through [UDI's document service](https://www.udi.no/dokumenter) to the correct case. Follow any other instructions from UDI for your case.
4. Save the receipt and confirm with your representative which case and letters they will follow up.

The UDI form also describes email submission to dokument@udi.no or submission by post if uploading is not possible. Use the official service when you can, so sensitive identity documents reach the correct case. UDI says registration of the power of attorney normally takes about one week after submission; do not plan an important call as though it will have been registered the same day.

## Can you limit or revoke the power of attorney?

Yes. UDI's form says **you decide what the authorisation covers and how long it lasts**. Read the options and free-text fields before signing. A power of attorney for one case is different from giving someone access to all your public services.

You can revoke the authorisation at any time. UDI's form says you can email **udi@udi.no** to do so. State your name, date of birth or DUF number, who the representative is, and that you revoke the authorisation from a specified date. Do not send more sensitive information than necessary in ordinary email. Ask for confirmation and check that UDI has the right contact details for you after the change. If a deadline is approaching, keep following the case while the change is registered.

Example: Nadia authorised her employer when she applied for a work permit. After changing jobs, she no longer wants her former employer to receive new letters. She sends UDI a clear revocation notice, updates her own email address and keeps the confirmation. She does not assume that changing jobs alone cancels the authorisation.

## Is verbal consent enough for one phone call?

If you need a friend to help with **one call**, UDI describes a less formal option: you are present on the call and give verbal consent for UDI to discuss the case with that person. Consent applies only to that call and must be given again next time. Your friend does not automatically receive ongoing access to documents or the decision.

This may work when you need help with language or a specific question, while a lasting power of attorney is suitable when someone will follow up on the case over time. If you need an interpreter, you can also ask UDI how the call can be arranged. Do not give anyone passwords, BankID codes or access to your private login to “solve” the power of attorney. [The article about digital authorisations](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/digital-fullmakt-uten-dele-bankid) explains why you should not share login credentials for other public services. A UDI power of attorney has its own form and process.

## Does a partner automatically get access to a family immigration case?

Do not assume so. Being a spouse, cohabitant or **reference person** in a family immigration case does not mean that the person can freely access all information in the applicant's case. UDI refers to a power of attorney when someone is to speak on the applicant's behalf. The applicant decides whether to grant one and to whom. This distinction can be particularly important if a relationship ends. Read about [residence and separation](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/samlivsbrudd-oppholdstillatelse-norge) if this applies to you.

## Checklist before you sign

- Do you know which documents and information the person will be able to read?
- Is the person over 18, and are their contact details correct?
- Have you agreed that all letters will be forwarded to you promptly?
- Have you selected the right case and duration in the form?
- Do you know how to revoke the authorisation?

SamfunnPrep can help you understand terms about Norwegian authorities in the [family immigration topic section](https://samfunnprep.no/en/tema/familieinnvandring), but cannot access your UDI case or act as your representative. Ask UDI about registering the power of attorney if you are unsure.
