## Key takeaways

- Previous prices concern the same seller Check the lowest price during at least the last 30 days before the sale starts, and compare with other shops too.
- Compare the full cost Check the model, contents, delivery and any taxes before deciding how cheap the offer is.
- Save the offer and conditions Screenshots and order confirmations make it easier to ask about the previous price or complain about your purchase.

Check Black Friday offers against the shop's previous price and price history. A large discount does not always mean the lowest price. Compare the same product, include delivery, and save the offer before paying.

## What does the previous price on an offer mean?

The **previous price**, called førpris in Norwegian, is the price the shop uses to calculate the discount. For advertised reductions on ordinary goods, it must reflect the shop's lowest price during at least the last 30 days before the sale starts.

This rule was checked as of 4 October 2026. Forbrukertilsynet, the authority supervising marketing and consumer rules, explains it in its [guidance on sales and offers](https://www.forbrukertilsynet.no/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/veiledning-om-reglene-som-gjelder-ved-markedsforing-av-salg-og-betingede-tilbud-l2398774.pdf). The discount must be calculated from this previous price. Relevant prices offered to large groups in customer clubs also count.

This does not mean the offer is the cheapest in Norway. The rule concerns the price charged by the seller advertising the reduction. Another shop may charge less without showing a discount.

A manufacturer's recommended price is also different from the shop's own previous price. Check how the amount is actually labelled. For your rights after buying, SamfunnPrep has a separate guide to [withdrawal rights, complaints and warranties](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/forbrukerrettigheter-angrerett-reklamasjon).

## How do you check whether an offer is cheap?

Compare both the current price and changes over time. Price history tells you something different from the discount percentage: what the product actually cost earlier.

Start with the product you need. Write down its model name and the total amount you are willing to pay. You can then assess an offer without letting a large red percentage decide for you.

You can use a price comparison service, but check the shop's own website before paying. A comparison may be delayed or leave out some shops. It may also show a different colour, size or version.

Pay particular attention to:

- the exact model number and version
- its usual price over recent weeks and months
- prices from several sellers on the same day
- delivery and any other charges
- expected delivery and where the product is dispatched from
- conditions for returns, exchanges and payment

You do not have to wait for a particular sale day. If today's price meets your needs and budget, assess it on that basis. Nobody can promise that the product will become cheaper later in November.

## Check the model and total price

The best comparison uses the same product, the same contents and the full cost. Two almost identical product names can conceal different models or accessories.

Phones may have different storage capacities. Winter jackets may differ in size and material. A package containing several items cannot be compared directly with a single product either.

An imaginary example shows why delivery matters:

| Offer | Product price | Delivery | Total |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Shop A | NOK 900 | NOK 150 | NOK 1,050 |
| Shop B | NOK 1,000 | NOK 0 | NOK 1,000 |
| Shop C | NOK 950 | NOK 75 | NOK 1,025 |

These are **calculation examples**, not actual offers. Shop A shows the lowest product price, but shop B has the lowest total. Also compare whether delivery and the product are otherwise equivalent.

When buying from abroad, investigate taxes and the return address. Norwegian text on a website does not mean that the company or warehouse is in Norway. See SamfunnPrep's guide to [customs duties and VAT on parcels from abroad](https://samfunnprep.no/en/articles/toll-moms-pakker-utlandet-norge).

## What do customer clubs and limited stock mean?

A customer club offer may require membership. Read the conditions before treating the member price as the price available to you.

Check whether it includes a subscription, recurring payments or a requirement to make further purchases. An offer requiring three products is less useful if you need one. Calculate the cost of the entire basket.

The shop may have limited stock or a short promotion. This makes checking the information particularly important. A countdown or the words “only a few left” do not tell you whether the price is good.

Take a screenshot if the information seems unclear. Save the date, model, advertised discount and conditions. It is easier to ask for an explanation when you can show what you saw.

Ordinary membership or a genuine promotion is not unlawful in itself. A problem can arise when price information or conditions give a misleading impression. Forbrukertilsynet assesses this kind of marketing.

## What can you do about a misleading discount?

First ask the shop to explain its previous price and the applicable conditions. You can also report apparently misleading marketing to Forbrukertilsynet.

Be specific: “You show a previous price for this model. What price and period is it based on?” Attach the screenshot and link. Avoid sending your personal identification number or payment information in an ordinary question about an advertisement.

Reporting something to the authority is different from claiming a refund. The authority works with marketing rules. If your own purchase involves an incorrect price or another problem, address your claim to the seller and explain what you want.

A price falling the day after your purchase does not automatically give you a right to the difference back either. Check whether the shop promised a price guarantee. Its conditions may specify which products and periods it covers.

Forbrukerrådet, which advises consumers, provides [guidance on safe online shopping](https://www.forbrukerradet.no/forside/okonomi-og-betaling/netthandel-misfornoyd/). Use it when an online shop is unfamiliar too.

## Before paying and after buying

Check the seller, product and payment conditions before confirming your order. Afterwards, save the order confirmation and monitor delivery.

Look for a company name, contact information and a clear way to complain. A secure browser connection is useful, but does not prove that a shop is trustworthy. Be cautious if you are pressured to pay outside its normal payment system.

Credit purchases or certain card payments can provide an additional route for claiming money back when the seller does not resolve the problem. This is not a guarantee that every purchase will be refunded. The payment method, basis of the claim and documentation matter.

For an ordinary online purchase from a business, you generally have a right of withdrawal, with exceptions for certain goods. For a purchase in a physical shop, check its voluntary exchange policy. A sale sign does not remove your statutory rights when a product is faulty.

Use [SamfunnPrep's tools for everyday life in Norway](https://samfunnprep.no/en/verktoy) when you want to organise practical tasks. For a planned purchase, make a short list: need, model, total price and last return date. This makes the offer easier to assess and the documentation easier to find.

## FAQ

### What is the previous price on Black Friday?

For advertised reductions on ordinary goods, the previous price must reflect the seller’s lowest price during at least the last 30 days before the sale starts, checked on 4 October 2026.

### Does a large discount mean the cheapest price?

No. The percentage compares with a previous price from the seller. Compare the same product at several shops and include delivery.

### Can I get money back if the price falls?

A later price reduction does not automatically entitle you to a refund. Check whether the shop promised a price guarantee and read its conditions.

### What can I do about a misleading discount?

Ask the shop to explain its previous price and save the advertisement. You can report it to Forbrukertilsynet. A report is different from an individual refund claim.
