# BankID, ID-porten and MinID: how to get a digital ID in Norway

## Understand how it works

MinID can be an early option without a bank account. It does not give access to every service that accepts BankID. BankID is issued through a bank after its identity checks; opening an account and receiving BankID are separate steps.

## When and how long?

Start after your ID number and registered postal address are ready. Digdir normally quotes 3–6 working days for the MinID letter; contact support after 10 working days without it.

## What to do

1. Check your registered postal address before ordering the MinID activation letter.
2. Register MinID using the letter and your own contact details.
3. Ask your bank what documents and appointment it requires for BankID.

## Which services can MinID actually unlock?

MinID does not provide ordinary access to Helsenorge's personal health services. There is a limited exception for school and youth health services in the Helsenorge app. For other personal services, use an electronic ID at the required high security level or contact the healthcare service directly.

BankID on mobile was discontinued on 1 September 2024. It is different from today's BankID app. Do not follow old instructions to activate BankID on mobile. Check the current options on the official login page, and never approve an unexpected request to identify yourself or sign.
